Dedar presents the Weaving Anni Albers exhibition project at the Paul Rudolph Institute in New York
Following installations in Milan, Copenhagen and Como, the collaboration between Dedar and The Josef & Anni Albers Foundation arrives in New York at the Paul Rudolph Institute.
A dialogue that continues
This exhibition represents the fourth iteration of an ongoing collaboration with The Josef & Anni Albers Foundation, born from Dedar’s desire to reinterpret, through modern techniques and a refined sensibility, five fabrics originally conceived and woven by the Bauhaus artist and designer between 1936 and 1974. Balancing archival fidelity with contemporary production techniques and an aesthetic that speaks to contemporary design, the collection creates a dialogue between art and functionality, past and present.
Weavings of light and architecture
The choice of the Modulightor Building as the exhibition venue reflects the same sensibility that animates the entire project: a subtle balance between rigor and freedom, architectural rationality and textile expression. The building’s multiple levels, modulated light and white geometric surfaces offer an environment in dialogue with the patterns, colours and textures of the textiles, revealing how Albers and Rudolph operated according to similar logics of structure, rhythm and material intelligence.
Both figures believed that modernism did not necessitate austerity. Albers elevated weaving to an art form, while enriching artistic language by using the loom as a creative tool. Rudolph, in turn, envisioned an architecture that engaged with texture and sensory experience.
The setting design, curated by Akari Endo-Gaut, highlights the fabrics as true protagonists. Each textile is displayed with the intention of revealing its depth – its interplay of light and shadow, the tactility of its weave and the modernity inherent in its composition. It is an invitation to engage with the space, in an intimate exploration of Albers’s legacy.
An enduring legacy
The project celebrates the artist’s legacy and embraces her invitation to create and recreate. Weaving Anni Albers is a dialogue across time, renewing the connection between Albers’s vision and Dedar’s ongoing textile research.
